Mr Fick first became involved in rugby administration through the club ranks in the erstwhile Far North province (Limpopo Blue Bulls) from the early 1970s, before he was elected as president of the Blue Bulls in 2005. He served the union in that capacity for eight years, until 2010, when he was first elected onto the SA Rugby Executive.

He served an initial term of four years and was re-elected in 2014, until he stepped down from the role in 2018.

“Oom Boet was a voice of reason for many years on the Executive and someone who dedicated a big part of his life to the game we all love,” said Mr Alexander.

“As president at the Bulls, he was at the helm when they won the Vodacom Super Rugby trophy three times, as well as a number of Carling Currie Cup titles.

“Oom Boet had a calm and friendly demeanour and a warm personality, but when we got down to business he always ensured we sought solutions to problems in a very unassuming manner.

“His experience of sport administration means he also served on a number of other SA Rugby committees and everyone knew he was always willing and able to assist in any way needed.

“Oom Boet was a true servant of the game. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Janet, children Magda, Hein, Anel and Klein Hein, other family, friends and loved ones in this very sad time. May you find solace in the wonderful memories of Oom Boet.”
