About
South Africa hosted the six-team second tier WXV 2 competition in Cape Town in 2023 and 2024, with six teams - the Springbok Women, Japan, Australia, Italy, Scotland and Wales - playing in a cross-pool format in the second year. The sixth-placed regional position in the WXV 2 competition at the end of each season will be relegated to WXV 3. WXV 1 was hosted in Canada and WXV 3 returned to Dubai. Due to Rugby World Cup, the tournaments will not take place in 2025.
The history
In 2023, the first year of WXV 2, the Springbok Women finished third behind Scotland and Italy, edging out Japan, the United States and Samoa. The inaugural WXV 1 was won by England, while Ireland were crowned champions of WXV 3. In 2024, WXV 1 was won by England, while WXV 2 was won by Australia, and WXV 3 was won by Spain.
