The Capetonians won 20-19 after holding a 13-3 lead at the break, and will host the Vodacom Blue Bulls – who won of the Inland Section on Friday – in the U19 final next weekend at City Park in Cape Town.

In the other match played on Saturday, Eastern Province got their first win of the week when they beat Boland by 31-17.

Match summaries:

DHL Western Province 20 (13), Cell C Sharks 19 (3)

A 10-point lead at the break was enough for DHL Western Province to pip the Cell C Sharks by 20-19 in the Coastal Section decider of the SA Rugby Under-19 Provincial Championship in Paarl on Saturday.

It was a tough first half as both teams fought tooth and nails for an advantage, and after the Cell C Sharks took a 3-0 lead courtesy of a penalty goal by Darren Hendricks (fullback) in the fifth minute, the Capetonians settled down a bit.

The only try of the half belonged to William Rose (scrumhalf), who scored after 19 minutes, while Juan Mostert (flyhalf) kept the score board ticking over for DHL WP with a conversion and two penalty goals.

The Cell C Sharks took control of the second half though and three more penalty goals in the third quarter saw them claw their way back to a one-point deficit with the clock winding down.

WP’s second try, by Matthew Cordy (flanker), to put a bit of daylight between the teams, but the KwaZulu-Natalians refused to give up and a converted try by Max Montilla restored scores to a one-point game.

That is how it stayed though, and DHL WP could celebrate going through the Coastal Section unbeaten, albeit with the narrowest of margins.

Scorers:

DHL Western Province – Tries: William Rose, Matthew Cordy. Conversions: Juan Mostert (2). Penalty goals: Mostert (2).

Cell C Sharks – Try: Max Montilla. Conversion: Rynhardt Jonker. Penalty goals: Darren Hendricks (3), Dylan Pretorius.

Eastern Province 31 (12), Boland 17 (12)

Eastern Province found a higher gear in the second half of their match against Boland, which meant they ended the Coastal Section of the U19 Championship with a well-deserved 31-17 win.

Grayson Ditlow scored two of their tries as the men from the Eastern Cape outscored their Winelands counterparts by five tries to three.

It was 12-12 at the break, but three EP tries in the first 10 minutes of the second half effectively ended the Boland challenge.

Although the Bolanders pulled one back with 20 minutes to go, that was as good as it got for both teams as the scorers were not troubled again in the match.

Scorers:

Eastern Province – Tries: Cole Kirkwood, Lennox Holster, Jayden Bantom, Grayson Ditlow (2). Conversions: Bryce Collins (2), Bantom.

Boland – Tries: Jarquin Kerr, Daven Benjamin, Caine Stadler. Conversion: Cullen Plaatjies.
