1955 TOUR: STATISTICAL QUIRKS

1 The first test at Ellis Park attracted a crowd of 95 000 (official), but it is rumoured that at least another 10 000 people got in through various unlawful means. At the time it was the biggest crowd to witness a rugby union match in history.
2 The aggregate of 45 points in the first test was the highest in the history of South African rugby.
3 In the first test, with the score on 23-22 in favour of the Lions after a try by Theuns Briers in injury time, Jack van der Schyff lined up for the conversion to win the match for the Springboks. He pushed the ball left of the posts and the Lions were the victors. Van der Schyff never played for the Springboks again.
4 Tommy Gentles, the smallest player ever to play for South Africa, made his Springbok debut in this first test.
5 In the second test at Newlands, Cape Town, the Springboks scored seven tries, the most by South Africa on home soil at the time. Tom van Vollenhoven scored a hat-trick, equalling the then South African record of three tries in a test match.
6 During this series South Africa scored the 800th point in test rugby as well as the 150th test try which was scored by Chris Koch in the first test at Ellis Park. With this try, Koch set a new record for most test tries as a prop which is still a record to this day, now shared by Os du Randt.
