1997 TOUR: STATISTICAL QUIRKS

1 The 67-39 win over Northern Free State was the highest score the Lions achieved on this tour (the third highest in all Lions tours to South Africa), but it also produced a record for the most points conceded in a match by a Lions side to South Africa.
2 The second most points conceded by a Lions team were also on this tour when they went down to Northern Transvaal 30-35 and again to South Africa in the last test with the score 16-35.
3 For the first time in a match in South Africa a total of 6 successful penalty goals were kicked by the Lions. Neil Jenkins set this record against Natal in Durban.
4 Two players from the opposition of the Lions managed to score a record 20 points against the Lions. Casper Steyn for Northern Transvaal with a try, 3 conversions and 3 penalty goals in Pretoria and Jannie de Beer for Free State in Bloemfontein, also from a try, 3 conversions and 3 penalty goals.
