COACHES LOGBOOK
South African rugby has a very proud rugby heritage spanning over a hundred years. In order to maintain our standing in world rugby, and to help ensure rugby is the first choice sport for young players in South Africa we need high quality rugby coaching at all levels.

To achieve this, we cannot focus only at the professional level. We must start by laying a strong foundation through high quality coaching of our young players. I believe that this manual will enable you as coaches to further develop your own coaching skills, so that you can more effectively develop the young players you coach... IMMEDIATELY PRIOR TO MATCH,
HALF TIME and AFTER MATCH

FACTORS WHICH MAY INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY
  • Players participating in rugby for the first time

  • Players testing new positions

  • Players who are not match fit at the start of the season

  • Mismatching of opponents

  • Lack of discipline amongst players

  • Non-enforcement of the Laws of the Game

  • Please bear in mind players are generally at a higher risk of injury at the start of the season.

POINTS TO REMEMBER WHEN EXECUTING A TACKLE:
  • Head up, eyes open

  • Focus on the target

  • The tackler must ensure that his head is to the side of the ball carrier's hips

  • The smaller the area, the lower the impact of the tackle

  • ENSURE THAT:
  • The person being tackled turns with the tackle

  • The person executing the tackle must have his head to the side of the ball carrier and must fall with his head on top of the opponent

  • The inability of teams to gain first phase possession from scrums is often the cause of their defeat.
The following points are vital to ensure the success and safety of the scrum:

  • All 8 players must learn to bind together correctly.

  • The players must only bind on instruction from the referee

  • If a player is unable to pass the ball before or during contact and he cant beat the opponent, he has no option other than to handle the situation by remaining on his feet. When the ball carrier cannot pass out the ball then a maul is formed.
SAFETY IN THE RUCK - REMEMBER

  • When the ball carrier is brought to the ground he drives forwards and drags the defender behind him, creating space to fall and place the ball
