Junior provincial semi-finalists confirmed

The semi-finalists in the SA Rugby Under-21 and Under-19 Provincial Championships were confirmed this past weekend in a gripping close to the pool stages, with the teams set to have a week off before their playoff matches.

In the SA Rugby U21 Championship, the Xerox Golden Lions secured the second home semi-final, as they overturned a 15-12 halftime deficit against the Cell C Sharks in Durban to win 36-15 thanks to their five tries to two by the hosts, while DHL Western Province sealed their semi-final berth as they thumped the Leopards 78-7 with the side running in an impressive 12 tries.

Toyota Free State also ensured that they finished in top four for a playoff spot as they powered their way to a 67-25 victory against Eastern Province thanks to their effective attacking display, which saw them cross the tryline 10 times.

The semi-finals will see log-leaders, the Vodacom Blue Bulls, meet Toyota Free State in Pretoria, and the Xerox Golden Lions take on DHL Western Province in Johannesburg.

In the SA Rugby U19 Championship, DHL Western Province secured the top spot on the log and a home semi-final as they outplayed the Leopards 36-5 in Potchefstroom, with centre Lyle Hendricks contributing one of his team’s five tries, four conversions and a penalty goal for his 16 points.

The Xerox Golden Lions also cemented their home semi-final with a rewarding 69-27 victory against the Cell C Sharks in Durban, with their dominant display earning them 11 tries, while Toyota Free State earned a comprehensive 63-12 victory against Eastern Province to finish in fourth place for a playoff spot.

Western Province will host Toyota Free State in Cape Town and the Xerox Golden Lions will battle it out with the Vodacom Blue Bulls in a Gauteng derby in Johannesburg in the semi-finals.

The SA Rugby Under-20 Championship pool stages, meanwhile, came to close on 30 September, with the sides now focused on their semi-finals this weekend, in which log-leaders, the Griffons will host Boland, and SWD will take on the Limpopo Blue Bulls.
