SA Rugby Sevens Academy to keep focus in Chile
January 12, 2018
The SA Rugby Sevens Academy will focus on their internal processes and to again improve as a team when they take to the field in Vina del Mar in Chile this weekend, in the second of two tournaments in the Sudamericarugby 7s series.

The team clinched gold in Uruguay in the first of the two tournaments in Punte del Este last weekend, but according to assistant coach Sandile Ngcobo, that feat was applauded and appreciated and then put out their minds when they arrived in Chile.

"We are very proud about the way we played last weekend, but this is a new tournament with new challenges, although most of the teams also played in Punta del Este. This one will be even tougher for us, as our opponents had a good look at our play and will be better prepared when they face us."

The South Africans will face Paraguay in their tournament opener on Saturday and then face Ireland and Brazil in their remaining pool A matches. They did beat Paraguay in pool play last weekend and also squeezed out Ireland in the Punta del Este quarterfinals.

“All the South American teams are trying to be the final team from their continent to qualify for the Rugby Sevens World Cup in the USA in July, so are playing with lot of passion and purpose. We can only look at ourselves though and do the same.”

The squad trained well since arriving in Vina del Mar.

“We had some injury setbacks with JC Pretorius and Impi Visser ruled out, but luckily Henk Cilliers joined us. He played for our SA Schools Sevens team last year and will give a good account of himself,” Ngcobo said.
