Cavaliers thrash Eagles

The Boland Cavaliers produced a strong second-half performance to trounce the SWD Eagles 51-10 (halftime 22-10) in their SuperSport Rugby Challenge match at the Alfa Street Sports Grounds in Malmesbury on Saturday.

The demolition could have been far worse had Divan Nel, Elgar Watts and Adriaan Carelse brought their kicking boots with as the Cavaliers missed four of their conversion attempts with fullback Nel missing two and flyhalf Watts and replacement fullback Carelse missing one each.

The Eagles, who have now lost seven consecutive matches in the competition, were on the back foot early on as Nel opened the scoring with a penalty after just three minutes before left wing Sergio Torrens darted down the touchline to score the first try in the corner, making the conversion difficult for Nel, which he missed.

But the visitors found their feet and hit back ten minutes later when scrumhalf Dillin Snel darted through for his side's only try of the game.

Flyhalf Leighton Eksteen converted to leave the men from George just a point adrift midway through the first half.

From that point on it was just one way traffic, despite Eksteen landing a penalty after 30 minutes but not before prop Clinton Theron surged over for Boland's second try which was converted by Nel.

The Cavaliers finished off the first half in style when Watts showed some fancy footwork in scoring close to the uprights, making the conversion for Nel a simple affair.

The home side started the second half with a bang as flanker Ludio Williams scored the bonus-point try just three minutes after the restart.

Both sides made a raft of changes, which did not deter the home side, who extended their lead to 24 points when right wing Charles Mayeza showed a burst of speed, sprinting down the right-hand touchline to score in the corner.

The visitors ran out of steam in the final 10 minutes of the match as Boland ran in three further tries through centre Edwin Sass, captain and Number 8 Zandre Jordaan and Watts picking up his second five-pointer of the afternoon.

Jordaan's try capped off a wonderful afternoon for the Cavaliers captain as he celebrated his 100th appearance in Boland colours while leading his team to their third victory of the season in the South Section.

The victory for the home side lifted them to within three points of the EP Kings while the Eagles remained rock-bottom of the log.
