September 17, 2016

The Hino Valke torunced the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias 50-20 (halftime 19-6) at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday to reach the semifinals of the Currie Cup First Division.

The Valke, who needed just a victory to secure fourth spot, registered eight tries in clinching a bonus-point win that moved them above the SWD Eagles and set up a date with the table-topping Leopards.

Scrumhalf Eugene Jantjies scored two tries, two conversions and two penalties to be the only name on the home side's score-sheet. Wingers Charles Mayeza and Etienne Taljaard, and scrumhalf Johan Pretorius all scored a brace of tries which were complimented by tries from replacement scrumhalf Anrich Richter and Number 8, Reg Muller.

Flyhalf Karlo Aspeling succeeded with three conversions before his replacement Warren Potgieter added a further two conversions.

The home side led 6-5 after 28 minutes as Jantjies landed two penalties, either side of an unconverted try by Mayeza. But a two minute blitz resulted in two tries by Muller and Pretorius, which were both converted by Aspeling, giving the visitors a 13-point advantage. The first half was spoiled by a scuffle which saw referee Rodney Boneparte send the Valke's Muller and the Welwitschias' flanker, Rohan Kitshoff to the sin bin for 10 minutes on the stroke of halftime.

Just 60 seconds after the restart, the visitors extended their lead as Pretorius dashed over for his second score which Aspeling failed to convert. Right wing speedster Taljaard scored his first try which Aspeling converted shortly before the return of Muller and Kitshoff, to give the Valke a commanding lead of 25 points.

But the home side hit back just three minutes later as Jantjies scored his first converted try. But the joy was short-lived as Meyaza scored his second try moments later. The Valke extended their lead with a converted try from replacement scrumhalf Richter with just 14 minutes remaining on the clock.

Two minutes later and Jantjies had his second converted try after a lovely break before the teams became involved in another scuffle resulting in yellow cards for the Valke's JP Mostert and Dwight Pansegrouw and one for the hosts' Nian Berg.

But the visitors had the final say, scoring at the sound of the final hooter when Taljaard went over for his second, which Potgieter converted.
