Leopards secure home semifinal
September 10, 2016

The Leopards guaranteed themselves a home semifinal as they cruised to a 49-31 (half-time 21-0) win over the SWD Eagles in their Currie Cup First Division match at Profert Olen Park in Potchefstroom on Saturday.

The Leopards came into the match unbeaten this season and their good form continued as they ran in seven tries to six to strengthen their lead at the top of the table and are now guaranteed to host a semifinal while they have given themselves a real chance to secure a home final if they get that far.

However, the Leopards, after opening up a commanding 49-5 lead, were made to work hard for the win in the end as SWD finally found some form to run in four unanswered tries to add some gloss to the scoreline.

The Leopards made all the early running as they eased to a 21-0 lead at half-time thanks to tries from flank Loftus Morrison, right wing Dean Gordon and left wing Bradley Moolman.

The hosts continued their good form in the second half as flyhalf Gene Williemse and outside centre Adrian Vermuelen both crossed for converted tries before the home team were awarded a penalty try.

SWD finally opened their account when inside centre Ozard Martin du Toit dotted down in the 56th minute for the first of his two tries in the match.

The Leopards took their score to 49 after Gordon crossed for his second try of the match before SWD sparked their late comeback.

Du Toit and replacements Christo du Plessis, Kurt Haupt and Daniel Roberts all grabbed tries but it was to no avail as the Leopards held on for the win.
