Blue Bulls claim Gauteng bragging rights

The Vodacom Blue Bulls bounced back from last week's disappointing loss to the Cell C Sharks by beating defending champions Xerox Golden Lions 31-17 (halftime 16-10) in their Currie Cup match at Loftus Versfeld on Friday evening.

The Jukskei Derby started out with a flurry of attacking inroads by both teams but they had to settle for penalty goals.

The Golden Lions cancelled out the three penalty goals by Blue Bulls pivot Tian Schoeman when centre Howard Mnisi scored a well worked try but their lead was short lived as Travis Ismaiel intercepted to score a converted try to give the home side a 16-10 lead at the break.

Lock Marvin Orie scored a try off a deft lineout move by the Blue Bulls before flank Kwagga Smith evaded several tackles to cut the deficit to just four points.

Replacement utility back Joshua Stander scored the Blue Bull's third try in the 73rd minute to draw clear of the Golden Lions. Schoeman added the extras to give the Blue Bulls a 31-17 win.
