The Boland Cavaliers, led by inspirational Captain Ryan Nell, were merciless as they thrashed the visiting Windhoek Draught Welwitschias 110-10 (halftime 47-10) in their provincial tournament clash on Saturday, scoring 16 tries in the process.

The conditions at Boland Park in Wellington were perfect for rugby, with little wind and the temperature peaking at 20 degrees Celsius.

It was a special day for lock Hanno Kitshoff as he earned his 50th cap for the Cavaliers, after making his debut back in 2012. The former Worcester Gymnasium pupil is a product of the Union’s age-group and club rugby setup and he even managed a try on the day.

Nell and his centre partner Christopher Bosch both dotted down four times each, with fullback Nico Scheepers also grabbing a hat-trick. Nell, who has been exceptional at outside centre this season, now tops the try-scoring log with 12 tries to his name.

A quick three-try blitz inside the first 13 minutes saw the Boland race to a 19-0 lead courtesy of tries by Scheepers, Nell and Kitshoff.

The home team kept the scoreboard ticking over and led 26-0, 33-0, 40-0 and even 47-0 before the Welwitschias managed to score their first points, making it 47-10 at the break.

The visiting wingers, Malcolm Moore and Phillip Nashikaku, both dotted down but the Namibians did not breach the Cavaliers tryline again.

After the break Nell kept the pressure on the visitors, opening the scoring after referee AJ Jacobs had restarted the match. Bosch and Nell were ripping the Namibian defence apart at will and they created numerous chances for their teammates.

Flanker Keenan Cronje, winger Sergio Torrens (2) and replacement back William van Wyk all added to the score with Scheepers kicking 15 conversions for a personal tally of 45 points.

The result sees the Cavaliers consolidate their claim for a place in the Currie Cup Premier Division, with a 10 point game over the nearest team in contention for qualification.

Next up for the Boland is a trip to Loftus Versfeld to face the Bulls while the Welwitschias host fellow strugglers Border in the Hage Geingob Stadium, Windhoek.

Boland finish their campaign with matches against DHL Western Province and the Xerox Golden Lions XV in Wellington, interspersed with a trip to Bloemfontein to battle the Toyota Free State XV.
