May 28, 2016

DHL Western Province secured a narrow 24-23 (halftime 10-13) victory at DHL Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday, handing ORC Griquas their first Provincial tournament defeat of the season.

The opening 10 minutes was a tense affair with both sides visiting each other's 22m area without reward but it was the home side who claimed first blood when flanker Janco Venter burst through a mall to score the opening try with flyhalf Scott van Breda converting to hand the hosts a seven-point advantage.

Griquas hit back shortly thereafter when flyhalf Andre Swarts slotted his first of three penalties of the afternoon but Van Breda restored the seven-point lead with a penalty of his own. A wonderful breakaway try from flanker Jonathan Janse van Rensburg brought the scores level at 10-all as Swarts converted the try.

Griquas then took the lead for the first time in the match as Swarts landed his second penalty on the stroke of halftime to give the visitors a slender three-point lead at the break.

But the visitors suffered a setback early in the second half with flanker Wendal Wehr being sent to the sin-bin for 10 minutes. WP used the one-man advantage well and scored their second try through hooker Chad Solomon after a strong maul from the resultant penalty. Van Breda added the extra two points to give his side a valuable four-point advantage.

Swarts brought Griquas to within one point of their hosts with his third penalty of the day but a wonderful finish from right-wing Khanyo Ngcukana put the hosts eight-points up midway through the second stanza as Van Breda slotted the conversion.

But Griquas ensured a final 10-minute encounter as their scrumhalf, Tiaan Dorfling scored a wonderful try, which Swarts converted to leave the teams battling it out with just a point separating them. WP held firm to secure their home victory and the four points while Griquas walked away with a single point for losing within seven points.
