May 21, 2016

The Xerox Golden Lions XV turned in a dominant second-half performance as they thumped the Cell C Sharks 53-16 (halftime 13-16) in their provincial tournament match at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Friday.

The Golden Lions went on the rampage in the second half, scoring 40 unanswered points, as they overturned a three-point deficit at halftime to shut the Sharks XV out of the match.

The visitors ran in eight tries in total, with six tries coming in the second half, with the hosts only able to answer with a single try, through inside centre Heimar Williams.

The mid-table clash saw two teams with identical results take each other on with both teams having collected 12 points after winning two and losing three of their first five matches.

The Sharks made the stronger start thanks to Williams’ sixth minute converted try before the Lions responded with a try of their own from hooker Ramone Samuels.

The home team extended their lead thanks to two penalties from flyhalf Tristan Tedder but the Lions cut the halftime deficit to three points thanks to a try from eighthman Ruaan Lerm and a penalty from pivot Marnitz Boshoff.

But the second half belonged almost exclusively to the Golden Lions and they took the lead for the first time in the match, 10 minutes after the restart, when fullback JW Bell went over for a converted try as the floodgates opened.

Outside centre Stokkies Hanekom, inside centre Jarryd Sage, replacement flank Derick Minnie replacement flyhalf Shaun Reynolds and right wing Koch Marx all went over for tries as the Sharks XV wilted.
