Pumas secure convincing win

The Steval Pumas climbed the log standings with a superb 47-7 (halftime 35-0) victory over the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias in their new provincial tournament rugby fixture at Ermelo High School, Ermelo, on Saturday.

The Pumas ran in seven tries to one to thrash the Welwitschias in a victory which thrust them into third spot on the log.

The Namibians, by contrast, remain in last position on the table, still chasing their opening victory after five matches into their campaign. The victory also maintained the Pumas’ push for qualification for the second stage of the tournament alive.

Pumas hooker Francois du Toit had a fantastic day scoring three tries with his hat-trick being completed shortly before the end of the game. He was prominent throughout the match and he was especially effective in the loose for his side.

Flank Nardus van der Walt managed a brace of tries of his own while prop DJ Terblanche and centre Hennie Skorbinski added the other two scores to crush the visiting side into submission.

The Pumas were almost unstoppable in the first half and ran the ball at every chance they got. They had the Welwitschias’ defence flat-footed for most of the half and led 35-0 at the break thanks to five converted tries. Flyhalf Justin van Staden slotted all five kicks.

The visitors introduced almost all their replacements and the second half was a better contest but the only points the Welwitschias could manage came in the 67th minute when left wing Russell van Wyk crossed a try. Replacement flyhalf Justin Nel slotted the conversion.

But the Pumas had blown their opponents away in the first 40 minutes and were full value for their emphatic victory.
