Three straight wins for Bulldogs
April 25, 2016
Border Bulldogs made it three in a row when they scored a 26-14 (half-time 0-7) victory over Eastern Province Kings in their new provincial tournament rugby fixture at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, in Port Elizabeth, on Saturday.

The Bulldogs had a skip in their step after securing well-deserved wins over the Cell C Sharks XV and the Xerox Golden Lions in their opening two matches.

The Kings, by contrast, had lost both of their matches against the SWD Eagles and the Boland Kavaliers.

The small crowd looked on as the lion-share of the first half went scoreless. The play went back and forth with both sides probing each others’ defensive lines. But both stood firm while matters were not helped by a smattering of handling errors.

It was not until as late as the 27th minute that the first points came.

It was the EP Kings finally broke through when flyhalf Simon Bolze burst through the Border backs to score midway out. He converted his own try to round off the scoring at halftime.

Soon after the restart, the Kings were down to 14 men when scrumhalf Franswa Ueckermann was yellow-carded. In the ensuing minutes, Border finally got off the mark after some enterprising play rounded off by left wing Michael Makase. Flyhalf Oliver Zono levelled matters with his conversion.

Border began calling the shots after that with their backs running at the Kings whenever the opportunity presented itself. The homeside eventually caved in and replacement Hendri Storm scored Border’s second try on the hour. Zono converted for the visitors to lead 14-7.

The Bulldogs increased the lead with seven minutes remaining on the clock when replacement Siyamthanda Ngande bulldozed his way over from close. Zono added the extra points.

The visitors closed the game off with their fourth try scored by Ludwe Booi. Fullback Courtney Winnaar added a consolation five-pointer for the Kings on the hooter. He also kicked the conversion.
