Lions XV too good for Blue Bulls
April 25, 2016
The Xerox Golden Lions XV claimed a great 38-17 win (halftime 24-10) over the Vodacom Blue Bulls in their Provincial Cup match in Alberton on Saturday.

Five tries from the hosts to the two for the Bulls gave the defending Currie Cup champions a vital victory.

Having led by 14 points at the break, the Lions crossed the whitewash a further two times in the second stanza to pick up a morale boosting win.

The hosts burst to a double figure lead inside the first 10 minutes as a Shaun Reynolds penalty was followed by an Anthony Volmink try in the eighth minute. The Reynolds conversion made the score 10 - 0 in the hosts favour.

A Joshua Stander penalty brought the visitors back into contention before a Nico Janse van Rensburg yellow card brought the Lions third try of the afternoon. Jacques Nel, brother of Blitzbok Ruhan, darted over the chalk to give the Lions a 24 - 3 lead before the break.

Tapiwa Tsomondo's second try in as many weeks helped the Bulls to reduce the deficit as the sides headed into the break 24 - 10 in the Lions favour.

Shortly after the break, the mercurial Stokkies Hannekom scored the Lions fourth of the day as the centre crossed for a converted try to take the Lions to a three score lead.

A try through hooker Corniel Els in the 65th minute revived the Bulls hopes, shortly before scrumhalf Ricky Schroeder received a yellow to dampen the hosts chances of a win.

However, the Lions managed to survive the 14-man period on the field before captain Ruaan Lerm scored his side's fifth try in the 78th minute to seal proceedings well and truly.

A well deserved 38 - 17 win for the Lions in the end, as the Johannesburg team get their season back on track.
