Pumas break losing streak
April 22, 2016
The Steval Pumas ended their losing streak with a narrow 12-10 (halftime 9-10) win against the Boland Cavaliers in their provincial tournament clash at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Friday.

The Pumas had endured a rotten start to the competition, losing both of their first two games, while Boland came into the match on a high after two wins in their first two matches saw them head into the weekend’s matches in second place on the log, behind the Griquas only on points’ difference.

But the Pumas, despite being outscored by a try to nil, held on to win their first game of the season thanks to four penalties from flyhalf Justin van Staden.

Despite their poor form heading into the game, the hosts made the more impressive start to the contest with two penalties from Van Staden pushing them into a 6-0 lead after 10 minutes.

But Boland, in front of a crowd of 2 000 people, struck back when fullback Nico Scheepers went over for a try which he converted himself in the 23rd minute.

Scheepers extended the lead with a 34th-minute penalty before Van Staden cut the deficit to just a single point with a third successful penalty on the hooter as Boland went to the break holding a slender 10-9 lead.

The Pumas hit the lead again, 11 minutes after the restart, when Van Staden nailed his fourth penalty as the home team held on for a hard-fought win.

Steval Pumas – Penalties: Justin van Staden (4).

Boland Cavaliers – Try: Nico Scheepers; Conversion: Scheepers; Penalty: Scheepers.
