April 16, 2016

Selom Gavor ran in a hat-trick of tries as the Xerox Golden Lions hammered the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias 66-12 (halftime 38-5) in their provincial tournament match at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday.

Left wing Gavor completed his hat-trick as early as the first minute of the second half as the Golden Lions ran in 10 tries to two in a lop-sided clash played in front of crowd of 2500 people.

Fullback JW Bell and replacement lock Bobby de Wee both scored a brace of tries for the visitors who returned to winning ways after slipping to a 27-23 home loss against the Border Bulldogs in their opening fixture.

The out-gunned Welwitschias, who slipped to their second loss on the trot, were only able to answer with two tries, through fullback Riaan van Zyl and inside centre Daryl de la Harpe as they battled to cope with the pace and power of the Lions.

The match started with a flurry of scoring as Golden Lions’ lock Luvoyiso Lusaseni crossed for a try in the second minute before Van Zyl dotted down in the fourth minute to make the score 7-5 in favour of the Lions.

But the visitors soon settled into a rhythm and they eased to a 38-5 halftime lead thanks to two tries from Gavor and tries from hooker Ramone Samuels, right wing Koch Marx and Bell.

The second half was almost completely dominated by the Lions with Gavor, Bell and De Wee scoring tries with the home team only able to muster a converted try from De la Harpe.
