Griffons claim impressive victory

The Down Touch Griffons have scored no less than eleven tries to beat the Leopards by 76-26 in the two sides encounter in the new provincial competition at the HT Pelatona Project stadium in Welkom on Saturday afternoon.

A hat-trick of tries each by winger Selvyn Davids and fly half George Whitehead helped the hosts to an impressive victory over a Leopards side that lacked much of the lustre that it has become famous for the last couple of seasons.

Whitehead proved himself worthy to call the plays in midfield, not only scoring three impressive tries, but also kicking nine conversions to bring his personal tally of points to 33 for the game.

After the kick off in the first half it was clear that it was going to be a long afternoon for the Leopards as the Griffons scored three tries in the first 20 minutes, with Whitehead converting all of them after an early penalty for a quick lead of 24-0.

The Leopards clawed their way back via a five pointer by flanker Tiaan Liebenberg, but the first half belonged to the hosts as Davids scored his third of the afternoon, followed by Griffons eighth man De Wet Kruger to make it 38-5 in favour of the Welkom based side at halftime.

Winger Norman Nelson opened the Griffons tally in the second half with Whitehead completing his hat-trick soon thereafter as the Leopards simply had no answers on defence for the attacks of the Purple People Eaters.

Replacement prop Roan Grobbelaar took the Leopards to double digits with his try in the 54th minute, but that and other five pointers later by replacement Leon du Plessis and centre Adrian Vermeulen at the end of the day meant nothing against a barging Griffons attack.

A brace of tries by Griffons centre Vuyo Mboto, who was solid on defence as well, saw the hosts complete a well rounded performance to send the Leopards back home with their tails well and truly between their legs.
