The Vodacom Blue Bulls scored 17 unanswered points in the last 10 minutes to beat the Toyota Free State XV 20 - 17 (Halftime 3 - 7) in their Provincial Cup match at Loftus Versveld in Pretoria on Saturday.

Three tries from Tapiwa Tsomondo, Manie Libbok and Callie Visagie in the last 10 minutes of the match ensured that Bulls claimed their first win of the competition in front of their home fans.

The outstanding aspect of the Bulls play was undoubtedly their forwards who were superb in the set pieces, with their scrums impressing in particular. Another noticeable aspect of the Bulls play was the impact made by the bench with the likes of Callie Visagie, Abongile Nonkontwana and Joshua Stander impressing.

Bulls fullback Manie Libbok opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a penalty as the hosts gained an early advantage.

However, the Free Staters hit back with the opening try of the game some 12 minutes later. A super counter-attacking move started by winger Mapthuta Dolo was finished off by prop Ox Nche after the front ranker gathered an in-field chip kick from flanker Ntokozo Vidima.

Flyhalf Pieter-Steyn de Wet added the extras as the Free Staters took a 7 - 3 lead into the break.

Four minutes into the second half, Free State extended their lead to double figures courtesy of a converted try from Ntokozo Vidima.

The lead then extended to 14 points in the 50th minute as De Wet slotted home his first penalty goal of the match.

However, the Bulls were far from done and a superb last quarter from the hosts saw them pull off a miracle victory.

Some slick hands from JT Jackson set replacement flanker Tapiwa Tsomondo away down the left hand touchline as Tsomondo powered over for an unconverted try in the 69th minute.

The Bulls doubled up almost immediately as a Joshua Stander break from the kick off set up a good attacking phase for the hosts. JT Jackson was once again involved as the centre popped a pass to fullback Manie Libbok who cut past some would-be tacklers to score and bring the Bulls to within four points.

A typical Bulls driving maul try in the 76th minute saw Callie Visagie crash over. Joshua Stander converted superbly from the corner to put the final nail in the coffin on a superb 20 - 17 comeback win for the Bulls.
