Valke hold on for hard-fought victory
April 08, 2016

The Hino Valke scored a try in each half as they upset the Steval Pumas 12-9 (half-time 7-6) in their provincial tournament match at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Friday.

Hooker Dean Muir dotted down in the first half for the visitors while inside centre Andrew van Wyk grabbed a five-pointer in the second half as the Valke upset the highly-fancied Pumas.

The hosts were at least able to grab a consolation losing bonus-point with pivot Justin van Staden kicking three penalties although they would not have been happy with failing to make home advantage count as they began their campaign to claim a place in the Currie Cup Premier Division.

The Pumas had held the upper-hand in the early stages of the match and two penalties from Van Staden saw them open up a 6-0 lead.

But the Valke had the last laugh in the half with Muir barging his way over shortly before the break with flyhalf Karlo Aspeling kicking an important conversion in a low-scoring match.

The visitor’s good form continued after the break and they moved to six-point lead after 63 minutes when Van Wyk dotted down for an unconverted try.

The Valke turned in an impressive defensive performance and they managed to keep the Pumas attack quiet in the second half with the hosts only able to manage a single Van Staden penalty in the second stanza.

Steval Pumas – Penalties: Justin van Staden (3).

Hino Valke – Try: Dean Muir, Andrew van Wyk; Conversion: Karlo Aspeling.
