The Steval Pumas have retained their unbeaten record in this year's Vodacom Cup competition by beating GWK Griquas 25-16 in the two sides encounter in the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Friday evening.

In what was dubbed the grudge match after the Pumas relegated Griquas to the First Division of the Currie Cup last year at the same venue, the hosts looked the better of the two teams from the get go.

The Pumas started the better of the sides, with flyhalf JC Roos kicking a good penalty after Griquas were penalised at the first scrum of the game.

The visitors got into gear from there and progressed into the Pumas half and were rewarded with a penalty. Griquas fullback Jacquin Jansen, however, couldn't capitalise and pulled his kick wide.

In contrast Roos was again on target when he kicked his second attempt of the evening after the visitors again got pinned for an infringement in the scrum, resulting in a team warning by referee Pro Legoete.

The latter also extended a team warning to the Pumas for collapsing the visitors' driving maul and Jansen kicked the penalty that resulted from it.

The Pumas had done their homework on Griquas mauls and, in turn, put the visitors under good pressure with driving mauls of their own. Much like the Pumas, Griquas also could only stop them illegally and Roos kicked his third penalty of the evening as a result.

The hosts made much better use of the driving maul than Griquas and also scored their first try of the evening from there via flanker and captain Corné Steenkamp, which Roos converted.

On the stroke of halftime, Jansen kicked another penalty to bring the deficit within ten points.

Roos started the first half with an early penalty after another infringement by Griquas, this time at the breakdown area. It wasn't long, however, before the visitors used the driving maul and flanker Marnus Schoeman scored as a result.

Schoeman was sent to the sin bin shortly thereafter for infringing at the breakdown and Roos got another chance at goal, but missed the first one of the evening.

However, he produced another fantastic penalty kick later on to stretch his side's lead to 11 points.

Replacement back Gouws Prinsloo scored for Griquas in the dying minutes, but Roos countered with another penalty to deny the visitors any bonus points and bring his personal points tally to 20 for the evening.

Steval Pumas 25 (16): Try: Corné Steenkamp. Conversion: JC Roos. Penalties: JC Roos (6).

GWK Griquas 16 (6): Tries: Marnus Schoeman, Gouws Prinsloo. Penalties: Jacquin Jansen (2).
