Leopards outclass Limpopo Blue Bulls
March 15, 2014

It was another miserable week for the Assupol Limpopo Blue Bulls when they went down 71-10 to the Leopards XV in their Vodacom Cup North Section match at Polokwane on Saturday.

Still hurting from their 62-10 hammering at the hands of the Griffons last week, the Limpopo team conceded 11 tries, trailing 35-10 at halftime.

The struggling Limpopo side may, for a brief moment, have harboured hopes of being competitive when they opened the scoring with a penalty in the second minute, and fought back after the Leopards had put on 14 points.

Scrumhalf Niyaas Johnson sniped over for a try which, when converted by Andy Huysamen, brought the scores to 10-14 in the 16th minute.

But that was shortlived when the Leopards struck back within two minutes with a try by wing Rowayne Beukman, which opened the floodgates. By halftime, they had scored five tries, all converted by flyhalf Gerhard Nortier.

The Leopards rubbed salt into the wounds when they made wholesale changes during the break, taking off their two centres, George Tossel and Sergio Torrens for Jaap Pienaar and Johan Deysel, and their scrumhalf Malherbe Swart, and they took the opportunity to give nearly all the bench a run during the second half.

The onslaught never let up, with the Leopards adding another six tries in the second 40, while Nortier took his points tally to 16.

It was a welcome turnaround for the Leopards who were beaten last week by the Golden Lions, 18-16, with a last-minute penalty after leading all the way in Potchefstroom.
