Van Staden breaks Blue Bulls’ hearts
March 15, 2014

Justin van Staden kicked a penalty deep into injury time as the Steval Pumas beat the Vodacom Blue Bulls 22-20 in their Vodacom Cup North Section match at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Saturday.

Replacement flyhalf Van Staden nailed his penalty in the 82nd minute to break the Blue Bulls’ hearts after the visitors must have thought that they had snatched victory when left-wing Jesse Kriel slid over for a converted try in the last minute of regulation play.

The fact that the Bulls had even got so close was testament to their courage after they had found themselves trailing 16-0 at halftime against last year’s losing finalists.

The Pumas had made a confident start thanks to two penalties from flyhalf JC Roos before the hosts really took control of the match when eighthman Renaldo Botha barged his way over for a converted try in the 19th minute.

Roos kicked another penalty four minutes later as the Pumas eased to the halftime break.

However, the Bulls were in a more aggressive mood in the second stanza and they finally opened their account, four minutes after the restart, when lock David Bullbring muscled his way over for a converted try.

Bulls flyhalf Louis Fouche then kicked two penalties to narrow the gap to just three points with eight minutes to play.

Van Staden extended the hosts' lead with a 75th minute penalty before the Bulls took the lead for the first and only time in the match thanks to Kriel’s late try only for Van Staden to snatch the narrowest of victories.
