GWK Griquas could manage only two tries in their Vodacom Cup outing against the Down Touch Griffons to record their second victory in this year's competition.

The Peacock Blues beat the visitors 20-12 at GWK Park in Kimberley on Saturday afternoon.

Beating the Assupol Limpopo Blue Bulls comfortably last weekend in Bultfontein, the Griffons looked to carry that momentum to their game against Griquas. Some good attacking play early on helped the visitors to gain metres into the hosts half and visiting fly half Louis Strydom kicked a penalty to put the Griffons on the score board.

The hosts started building some good momentum of their own, and full back Jacquin Jansen levelled the scores in the 14th minute, kicking a good penalty after missing an easier attempt earlier.

The Griffons put together some impressive phases of play, only to see their momentum disrupted by passes going astray and the wrong decision making at times. They put Griquas under good pressure, but it was the hosts who took the points when they came their way and Jansen kicked another penalty shortly before halftime to give his side a lead of three points at the break.

Both Griquas and the Griffons started the second half well, but it was the hosts who scored the first try of the game when winger Rocco Jansen jotted down. Jansen converted to give Griquas a cushion of ten points.

The Griffons reduced the deficit to a converted try via another penalty by Strydom. The latter converted after the visitors put together some good attacking phases of play, only to see it stopped by Griquas ill discipline.

Marnus Schoeman, busy flanker of Griquas, scored his side's second try, proving that the Peacock Blues driving maul will be a key factor in their attack this year. The hosts set up the drive from a line out and Schoeman, who was recently head hunted by the Bulls, burst over for a converted try.

Strydom kicked a couple of penalties to bring the deficit down to 8 points for the Griffons in the last couple of minutes, but Griquas defence held fast and the hosts went home empty handed.

SCORERS:

GWK Griquas 20 (6): Tries: Rocco Jansen, Marnus Schoeman. Conversions: Jacquin Jansen (2). Penalties: Jacquin Jansen (2).

Down Touch Griffons 12 (3): Penalties: Louis Strydom (4).
