Pretorius brace sinks Valke
March 07, 2014

Trompie Pretorius scored a brace of tries to lead the Steval Pumas to a 26-6 (half-time 13-6) victory over the Valke in their Vodacom Cup North Section match at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park on Friday.

Right wing Pretorius dotted down in each half while flyhalf JC Roos kicked 16 points as last year’s beaten finalists made a winning start to their 2014 campaign.

The Valke were only able to reply with two penalties from pivot Cecil Dumond while they did not aid their own cause with flanks Vincent Gwavu and Jacques Verwey both picking up second-half yellow cards.

The visitors made all the early running in the match as they built a 13-0 lead after 27 minutes.

Roos opened the scoring with an early penalty before Pretorius sniped over for a try in the 18th minute.

Roos kicked the conversion before adding his second penalty nine minutes later as the visitors eased into a comfortable looking lead.

But the hosts, who won just two of their nine matches last season, clawed their way back into the contest thanks to two penalties from Dumond as they reached the break trailing by just seven points.

But the Pumas once again made a strong start to a half and Pretorius grabbed his second try 15 minutes after the restart with Roos once again kicking the extra points.

Roos continued to punish the Valke and he slotted his third penalty as the Pumas galloped in to a 23-6 lead after 59 minutes.

Roos, who represented the Blue Bulls at under 21 level, extended the lead once again, in the 68th minute, thanks to his fourth successful penalty to secure victory for the Pumas.
