Cavaliers leave Valke trailing
September 10, 2011
A 22-point second-half scoring blitz ensured that the Boland Cavaliers walked away with a 55-28 (halftime 21-14) victory over the Valke in an Absa Currie Cup First Division match played at Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park on Saturday.

The visitors were full value for the win, scoring seven tries on a sunny East Rand afternoon to notch their seventh win in eight outings and so keep the heat on the log-leading EP Kings.

For the Valke it was a familiar story, played out in front of around 300 die-hard supporters. The home side once again showed plenty of guts and a willingness to let the ball do the work, but in the end their defensive frailties were exposed at this level, despite crossing the tryline four times themselves.

The Bolanders once again had their duo of fullback Willie le Roux, who scored a brace, and flyhalf Elgar Watts to thank for orchestrating the victory.

Watts has been a points machine for the Cavaliers this season and he once again contributed healthily with the boot, kicking 20 points by way of four conversions and four penalties.

While it would be highly unfair to say that Boland are a one-man team, the truth is that Watts adds an attacking dimension which the side from Wellington have missed in recent seasons.

The Bolanders got onto the board as early as the third minute when veteran wing Danwel Demas strolled over. But the Valke are nothing if not adept at playing tit-for-tat, and hard-working flanker Warren Perkins gave his side the lead in the 13th minute with a try converted by flyhalf Juan Kotze, who would nail all four two-pointers he was presented with on the day.

Kotze himself would cross for a try on the half hour, but by then the Bolanders had already gone into an 18-7 lead, thanks to two penalties from Watts and a Cornal Hendricks try, which hinted at things to come.

Trailing by just seven points at the break, the Valke would have fancied their chances in the second period, especially after levelling the scores after 47 minutes with a try by Kotze's halfback partner Anrich Richter.

But Boland then produced a 22-point scoring blitz that took the game away from the men in red.

Both Le Roux (2) and Hendricks grabbed braces in a whirlwind third quarter to make it 43-21 after 67 minutes.

Valke lock Chris-Erich Ehlers barged over with three minutes to go to give his team a bonus point and a faint sniff of salvaging a second, losing bonus point.

But the home side's hopes were soon snuffed out when the Cavaliers scored twice in the final minutes to wrap up a comfortable victory and condemn the Valke to their fifth defeat of the season.
