The Boland Cavaliers shocked the defending champion Blue Bulls on Saturday when they ran out deserved 20-17 (halftime 10-5) victors in a Vodacom Cup match played at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

The Cavaliers bounced back brilliantly following a disappointing first-round loss (42-25) to Griquas last week.

For the Blue Bulls, it was their second successive defeat after they succumbed to the Sharks XV (30-19) in Durban on the opening weekend.

Both teams scored three tries but the Bolanders were full value for the win, fullback Jacquin Jansen proving the difference between the sides with a penalty six minutes from time.

The Bulls’ centre Stefan Watermeyer put his team 5-0 in front in the sixth minute with the first of two tries, but that proved to be the champions’ only score of the half as the Bolanders began to assert themselves.

Wing Cornal Hendricks made it 5-5 in the 25th minute before hooker Clemen Lewis got his team’s second six minutes later. Flyhalf Elgar Watts could not convert either five-pointer.

The Bulls were dealt a blow two minutes after the restart when prop Dean Greyling was yellow-carded, a situation which was made doubly alarming when wing Akona Ndungane followed his teammate to the sin bin five minutes later.

Old fox Bolla Conradie was the Bolander who made the most of the two-man advantage, crossing the line in the 49th minute for a try converted by new kicker Jansen to suddenly make it 17-5.

Watermeyer scored a second try with 15 minutes left, converted by flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff, to give his team hope, but Jansen kicked a penalty on 74 minutes to increase the lead to 20-12.

Replacement flyhalf Pieter van der Walt had the final say with a third try for his time just a minute out from full time, but it was just not enough to prevent the Bolanders from recording a famous victory.

SCORERS:

Blue Bulls 17 Tries: Stefan Watermeyer (2), Pieter van der Walt. Conversion: Marnitz Boshoff.

Boland 20 – Tries: Cornal Hendricks, Clemen Lewis, Bolla Conradie. Conversion: Jacquin Jansen. Penalty: Jansen.
