Griquas hammer Bulldogs
MWP
March 05, 2011
It was one-way traffic in Kimberley on Saturday afternoon as Griquas scored 13 tries to thump a hopeless Border team 84-9 (60-9) in a Vodacom Cup fixture.

Playing at Diamantveld High due to problems with GWK Park’s pitch (after heavy rain the last couple of months), the change of venue made little difference to the home side, who were on a mission from the outset.

Border never looked like troubling the former champions as they could hardly secure lineout ball and had very little to their attacking game.

Griquas compiled a 60-9 halftime lead in which they scored nine exciting tries, the best of which came in the 24th minute when eighthman Leon Karemaker broke down the blindside from the scrum.

Flanker Wesley Wilkins was on hand and drew the last defender before offloading to winger Richard Lawson on his inside.

If the match wasn’t over as a contest at 39-9 five minutes before the break, it certainly was when Shane Spring, Border’s blindside flanker, was red-carded for throwing a punch.

Although the defensive capabilities of Border left much to be desired, the attacking play of the Peacock Blues deserves credit.

Their driving mauls were impressive and their opponents had little answer in this department, even when they had their full complement of 15 players on the park.

Griquas made ample changes in the second half, which hampered their attacking play, while a heavy downpour in the final quarter made handling difficult and probably prevented Border from conceding a century of points.

SCORERS:

Griquas 84 – Tries: Wesley Wilkins (3), Ashley Wells, Richard Lawson (2), Barry Geel, Fabian Juries, Frikkie Spies, Wilmaure Louw, Logan Basson, Rudi Vogt, Burger Schoeman; Conversions: Rudi Vogt (3), Earl Rose (5); Penalty: Vogt.

Border 9 – Penalties: Brad Birkholtz (3).
