Blue Bulls, KZN looking strong in Absa Under-21 Cup
August 13, 2012
It was another win for the unbeaten KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend, but another defeat for the for the MTN Golden Lions mean they have now lost five in a row and are cellar dwellers in the Absa Under-21 Provincial Championship.

The Young Sharks shocked DHL Western Province at home, beating the Cape Town side 18-14 in a match that produced only one try. Wet and windy conditions at DHL Newlands prevented open rugby, but not for Fred Zeilinga, who punished the home side for their indiscretions in the match.

The Natal pivot kicked six penalties and only missed a drop goal attempt late in the first half.

WP fell behind early on and was forced into catch-up rugby all afternoon, something that proved too difficult for them considering the class of the visitors and the weather conditions.

The Toyota Free State was the latest team to pile misery on the MTN Golden Lions by beating them 32-27 at Coca-Cola Park in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The visitors jumped into a big lead by scoring three tries without reply and were leading 25-6 just before the break. National Under-20 lock Paul Willemse scored just before the whistle, but the Golden Lions still had all to do in the second half.

Two quick tries in succession, the second by Junior Boks scrumhalf Vian van der Watt closed the deficit, but a try by JJ de Klerk in the 60th minute secured the bonus point and win for the young Free Staters.

On Friday the Vodacom Blue Bulls responded brilliantly to some early pressure by the Leopards to register a convincing win. The home side were up 20-10 at the break, with a 95 meter try by Courtnall Skosan a particular highlight.

A brace of tries by Blue Bulls replacement centre Damian van Wyk just after the break extended their grip on the match and secure a 44-22 win.
