Two changes to Varsity Cup Dream Team

The much-anticipated match between the Varsity Cup Dream Team and Junior Springboks is set to take place at 19h00 at the Danie Craven Stadium on 25 April.

François Pienaar announced a 23-man squad on Monday after the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International final. Due to provincial commitments and injuries, a number of those named had to withdraw.

Nico du Plessis (FNB UJ) moves to tighthead, replacing Neethling Fouché (FNB Tuks), who had to withdraw due to surgery. Dillon Bakos (FNB UJ) moves to the bench (18).

Phumzile Maqondwana (FNB Shimlas) moves to no. 7, replacing Kobus van Dyk (FNB Maties) who has franchise commitments. Chris Massyn, who captained FNB Tuks to their glorious Varsity Cup title on Monday, joins the Dream Team on the bench.

The Varsity Cup Dream Team XV will line-up as follows: 15 Craig Barry (Captain, Maties), 14 Sibahle Maxwane (UP-Tuks), 13 Aphiwe Dyantyi (UJ), 12 Impi Visser (UP-Tuks), 11 Duncan Saal (Maties), 10 Tinus de Beer (UP-Tuks), 9 Andre Warner (UP-Tuks), 8 Kevin Kaba (NMMU), 7 Phumzile Maqondwana (Shimlas), 6 Daniël Maartens (Shimlas), 5 Loftus Morrison (NWU-Pukke), 4 Aston Fortuin (UP-Tuks), 3 Nico Du Plessis (UJ), 2 Wilmar Arnoldi (NWU-Pukke), 1 Andrew Beerwinkel (UP-Tuks). Replacements: 16 Johannes Snyman (UJ), 17 Luvuyo Pupuma (Wits), 18 Dillon Roy Bakos (UJ), 19 Johan Momsen (Maties), 20 Chris Massyn (UP-Tuks), 21 Herschel Jantjies (UWC), 22 Ernst Stapelberg (Maties), 23 Michal Haznar (Maties).

• Varsity Cup Dream Team captain, Craig Barry, has played 42 Varsity Cup matches since making his debut in 2013.

• Barry (9) and Sibahle Maxwane (8) were the leading try scorers in the 2017 Varsity Cup season.

• Playmaker Tinus de Beer scored 100 points for FNB UP-Tuks in 2017.

• Seven FNB UP-Tuks players, five FNB Maties players and four FNB UJ players feature in the Varsity Cup Dream Team.

• FNB Maties (2008 – 2010) and FNB UP-Tuks (2012, 2013 and 2017) have won the Varsity Cup title three times each – the most in the competition’s history.

• Junior Springbok head coach, Chean Roux, coached FNB Maties to a record three consecutive Varsity Cup titles (2008 – 2010).
