Goosen stars in SA U18 victory over England
July 23, 2010
SA U18 flyhalf Johan Goosen scored 15 points by kicking five penalties as the South Africans defeated England U18s 23-17 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

The hosts concluded a hat-trick of victories against England U18, France U18 (25-5) and the Namibians XVs (26-17) during their two-week Eastern Cape tour.

The South Africans held a 9-7 half time lead thanks to three penalty kicks by the Free State Cheetahs flyhalf Goosen.

Goosen kicked his first penalty in the 8th minute of the game after England were penalised for an infringement at a ruck.

The Grey College pivot then stretched his side’s lead to 6-0 after the visitors were penalised for offside play in the 14th minute of the game.

England then hit back with a try by winger Mark Jennings in the 20th minute of the match. His try was converted by centre Tommy Bell (6-7).

The SA U18s though were the side to add the final points in the first half when Goosen kicked his third penalty of the game after the tourists were penalised for hands in at ruck time.

England though were the first to score after the break when centre Elliot Daly dived in at the corner to hand his side the lead at 12-9. The conversion was missed by Bell.

The South Africans were then reduced to 14 men when referee Pieter de Villiers handed Goosen a yellow card for a high tackle in the 43rd minute of the match.

England then stretched their lead to 17-9 when Daly added his second try of the game in the 45th minute of the match.

The South Africans clawed their way back into the match when the talented inside centre Paul Jordaan kicked his first penalty of the game (17-12).

The scores then leveled at 17-17 in the 52nd minute of the game when a moment of magic by Jordaan spilt the England U18s’ defence to score his side’s first try of the game.

Goosen then handed the hosts the lead with seven minutes remaining in the game thanks to a superb 45-metre penalty kick. It was the Grey College flyhalf who stretched South Africa’s lead to 23-17 when he kicked a 49-meter kick after the visitors were penalised for offside play.

“We pretty pleased chuffed with this victory as this is now our second win over an England junior side in one month,” said SA Under-18 High Performance coach Eric Sauls.

“This victory simply shows that we have the talent in our country and we can compete and get the results against a side like England. It’s important now that we keep these guys together in the structures of SARU in order that they could further strengthen our resources in South African rugby.”

Scorers: SA Under-18s – Try: Paul Jordaan; Penalties: Johan Goosen (5), Jordaan.
England – Tries: Elliot Daly (2), Mark Jennings; Conversion: Tommy Bell.
