Valke upset form book
September 07, 2013

The Valke upset the form book on their way to a 28-21 (half-time 13-7) win over the Regent Boland Cavaliers in their Absa Currie Cup First Division match at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park on Saturday.

The Valke came into the game having won just once this season while Boland were well in the hunt for a semifinal place, only four points off fourth place on the log.

Valke loosehead prop Bruce Muller led the charge for the hosts as he went over for two tries while flyhalf Jaun Kotze ended with a personal haul of 13 points through a try, a conversion and two penalties.

Boland were outscored four tries to three but they did have the consolation of nabbing a losing bonus point.

The visitors had made the brighter start in front of a small crowd of around 150 people when wing Brendon April scooted over for a converted try in the sixth minute.

But the Valke struck back seven minutes later when Muller rumbled over for his first try before Kotze kicked a 28th minute penalty as the Valke hit the lead for the first time.

It was to be a lead that they would not relinquish and inside centre Willie Odendaal made sure of a 13-7 half-time lead for the hosts when he dotted down in the 34th minute.

The Valke made sure of their win as they scored 28 unanswered points in all with Kotze and Muller scoring second-half tries while Kotze also kicked a penalty.

Boland finally added some gloss to the scoreline when replacement flank Alwyn Bester crossed for a converted try with just two minutes left in the match but it proved to be too little too late for the visitors.

Valke – Tries: Bruce Muller (2), Willie Odendaal, Jaun Kotze; Conversion: Kotze; Penalties: Kotze (2).

Regent Boland Cavaliers – Tries: Brendon April, Phillip van Zyl, Alwyn Bester; Conversions: Jacquin Jansen (3).
