Blitzboks into Vancouver semifinals
March 11, 2018
A try after the final buzzer by Dylan Sage dramatically squeezed the Blitzboks past Australia in the Cup quarterfinals of the HSBC Canada Sevens on Sunday. The try sealed a 24-19 win over the Australians, who held a commanding 19-0 lead at the break of this pulsating match in BC Place.

The South Africans made a number of handling errors in the opening minutes and a lapse in defense allowed Australia to score an early try and a 7-0 lead.

A yellow card to Cecil Afrika resulted in the best spell for the men in yellow and they scored two more tries with the Blitzboks outnumbered on the field.

The second half saw a determined fight-back by South Africa.

Siviwe Soyizwapi scored twice in quick succession, with his second brilliantly converted from the touchline by Branco du Preez, who missed the first attempt.

With less than a minute left, Branco du Preez charged down a kick from the Aussies near their own line and Afrika pounced to score. Du Preez converted to tie things up.

With the buzzer gone, South Africa attacked from a line-out and after a number of phases, Sage was worked into space.

He had to work still, beating two Aussie defenders before he could crash over in the corner.
