Golden Lions maul Valke
June 16, 2017

The Xerox Golden Lions scored an impressive 14 tries including a hat-trick to wing Anthony Volmink as they thumped the Hino Valke 96-27 (halftime 35-27) in their SuperSport Rugby Challenge match at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park on Friday afternoon.

The home team took full advantage of the perfect winter's day as they crossed the line within two minutes thanks to No. 8 Reg-Hack Muller.

The Golden Lions responded minutes later as flank Fabian Booysen pounced on a turnover ball to dot down.

The Valke were allowed the space to run in the first half and they regularly exploited the gaps in the Golden Lions' defence, with wing Maphutha Dolo getting his first try in the 12th minute.

The visitors finally woke up from their slumber as they scored four tries in nine minutes with hooker Armand van der Merwe running the perfect support line to score in the 21st minute. His effort was followed by tries to scrumhalf Dillion Smit, No. 8 Jano Venter and outside centre Jacques Nel.

The Valke were not to be outdone though and replied with Dolo's second try as the winger showed a clean set of heels to break away from the defence while hooker Marco Klopper scored just before the break to cut the Golden Lions' lead to 35-27.

As good as the Valke were in the first half, they were equally as terrible in the second, with the Golden Lions running rampant as they crossed the try-line a further nine times.

Van der Merwe started the try scoring spree in the 47th minute with lock Marvin Orie following up two minutes later and Volmink scoring his first try in the 52nd minute.

The men from Johannesburg just could not be stopped as wing Michael Tambwe dotted down shortly after Volmink with replacement loose forward Hacjivah Dayimani crossing the chalk with 22 minutes left on the clock.

Venter secured his brace four minutes later as the Golden Lions attacked at will. Replacement utility back Jan-Louis La Grange added his name to the scoresheet in the 70th minute.

The Valke came close courtesy of replacement utility back Cameron Rooi, but his try was disallowed.

Volmink continued the visitors' attacking flair as he scored two quick tries at the death and flyhalf Shaun Reynolds converted both to hand his team a 96-27 win.
