The Tafel Lager Griquas and the Cell C Sharks XV have played to a 28-all draw in their superspRugby Challege encounter at Tafel Lager Park in Kimberley on Thursday afternoon.

Scrum half Renier Botha jotted down twice for Griquas as both sides scored four tries after the hosts held a slight lead of 14-13 at halftime. The Kimberley based side still resides at the top of the points log in the central section, with the Sharks six points behind them in second place.

The hosts started the better of the two sides, doing most of the attacking in the first 20 minutes. It was the visitors that got on the score board first though as full back Garth April opened their account with a penalty in the 7th minute.

Griquas rumbled onwards with their forward pack, and the resulting pressure lead to the first try of the game to hooker AJ le Roux, with centre Andre Swarts adding the extra two points. It wasn’t long however before the Sharks hit back via a five pointer by winger Ilunga Mukedi.

The visitors stepped up in the 27th minute to take a good lead of six points as April rounded of a promising move, but missed with the resulting conversion. The last ten minutes before the break belonged to the hosts, as Botha jotted down for the first of his brace of tries on the evening. After missing with an earlier penalty attempt, Swarts converted to give his side a slender halftime lead of 14-13.

Shortly after the second half started, Botha, came into the points again, with Swarts converting. The Sharks however never gave way, with S’bura Sithole scoring no less than a minute later and April converting the winger’s try to bring his side back within one point.

Lock Hyron Andrews try in the 50th minute seemed to sway the game in favour of the visitors, but this time Griquas answered back immediately as eight man Jason Fraser rounded of. His converted try meant a slender lead of three points for the hosts, before April’s penalty draw the scores level for his personal tally of 13 points for the game.
